If only there was someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. Job 9:33-34 (NIV)
The story of Job in the Bible recounts the circumstances of one man facing extreme suffering. Not only did he lose family and possessions, he also lost his health. Although the book was written many hundreds of years before Jesus was born, Job almost speaks prophetically as he sees the need for someone to mediate on his behalf.
God does not expect us to go through suffering alone. He is right there beside us.
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 (NIV)
