Deep and Wide

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. ( Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭16-19‬ (NIV)

Many years ago in Sunday School I remember singing a song entitled, ‘Deep and Wide’.  When I was young it didn’t really have any meaning, other than it was a song that had a catchy tune and was easy to sing.

Once I committed my life to Christ, I came across the verses above which speak about grasping ‘… how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ …’  I have now been a Christian for over 40 years and I am still grasping the full extent of God’s love in Christ.

The verses above also make me question the nature and focus of the prayers I have for others.  Paul didn’t tell his readers that he was praying for their material health and wealth.  Instead he is concerned for and focused upon their spiritual health and wealth.  When you pray for others, what is the focus of your prayers?

My prayer for each of you reading this today, is that you may increasingly grasp the reality of what Paul is speaking about in Ephesians.
