Wholehearted Obedience

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favour when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people …  Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭5-7‬ (NIV)

Have you ever thought of yourself as a slave?  The word conjures up in our minds the worst aspects of inhumane treatment of many millions of people.

However, if we were to substitute the word ’employee’ for ‘slaves’ in the first line of the verses above it would read ‘Employees, obey your earthly masters …’

Our responsibility as Christians is to be obedient, firstly to Christ, then as a result of this to be obedient to our employers.  We are told to obey not just when our employers are watching, but when they are not there.  In other words we are to be trusted to get on with our jobs and to put in the effort, because we are ‘… slaves of Christ …’  and to be obedient ‘… as you would obey Christ …’

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people …  We are to remember that ultimately we serve God, not people.

Every blessing
