But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)
The titles used in this verse from 1 Peter reiterate the specialness of the relationship between Christians and God. We are not talking here about Christian by accident of birth, but Christian due to rebirth. The titles reflect those given to the people of Israel as recorded in the Old Testament. The titles are:
- chosen people
- royal priesthood
- holy nation
- special possession
How do these titles make you feel? Excited? Apprehensive? Many people go through life not feeling special in any way. Others go through life convinced they are special, but have no basis upon which to base it. However, this verse reminds us that if we are in Christ, God sees us as special and chosen. Take heart from that.
Having been called out of darkness (our old life) to light (new life in Christ), we have been called for a purpose. We are told that our purpose is to declare God’s praises.
However, our specialness should not lead to arrogance, but to humility.
