Talking about your Faith

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭6:5-7‬ ‭(NIV)

Because you love God and have committed your life to Christ you will want to share your faith with others.  The problem will not be a lack of desire to share your faith, but how to do it.

The verses above, quoted from Deuteronomy 6, give some sound advice on how to go about sharing the good news with others.  The context is parents sharing with their children, but the lessons to be learned apply generally.

Notice firstly that in Deuteronomy the writer uses the words ‘Impress them on …’.  The word ‘impress’ here does not mean you are setting out to impress them.  If it did, you might be prone to exaggeration just to impress.  ‘Impress them on’ means that we are to speak truthfully and naturally about the good news and what God is doing in our lives.   We are to ‘tell it as it is’.   It also implies that we are to enthusiastically share what God has and is doing.  Whether we are sharing the good news with children, family, friends and acquaintances, or complete strangers the advice is to share it enthusiastically.

The second thing to notice is the use of the words ‘Talk about them …’.  This does not mean ‘tell them’.  There is a difference between talking about and telling someone something.  What is envisaged here is conversation – natural and two-way.  Talking naturally, in conversation sharing your faith, allows the other person to ask questions and to probe deeper into what you are sharing.

Lastly, the advice is to share the good news when you ‘sit’, ‘walk’, ‘lie down’, or ‘get up’.  In other words – share your faith when you are going about your normal everyday tasks.  We need to share God in the everyday things of life.

So whether you are in work, out for  coffee, doing a bit of gardening, or whatever, don’t be afraid to talk naturally and enthusiastically about your faith.  You might be surprised by how open people are to hear what you have to share.

Every blessing
