Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.
Luke 11:34-36 (NIV)
How do you know when it is time for an eye test? For many people it is the progressive deterioration of their eyesight that prompts them to take action. Perhaps they can no longer see clearly when driving, reading or watching television. What started as a slight inconvenience, has ended up becoming a problem.
Some of this can be true of the need for a spiritual eye test. When sin creeps in to a person’s life they can unwittingly welcome it, not seeing where it might lead. By the time they realise that sin has taken a hold in their lives, they no longer see clearly. This can result in excusing attitudes and actions that are incompatible with life in Christ.
Have you ever met someone who can no longer read even standard sized text, but who refuses to wear glasses? What may hold them back is not fear of wearing glasses, but an unwillingness to admit they have a problem. Sometimes pride may be the issue; pride in their appearance (pride takes precedence over practicality).
The same may be true of those in need of a spiritual eye test. Sin may have taken such a hold in their lives that they are unwilling to admit they have a problem. While those around them may see the problem, the person themselves is blinded to it. As those with a physical eyesight problem may try to hide it, so people are often tempted to hide their spiritual condition.
Now this is where a church and individual Christians have responsibility to be watchful for those within their group who might appear healthy, but whose focus has shifted. Perhaps they have drifted away, or there is evidence that life and words don’t match up. Dealing with the issue takes courage, but it also requires tack. Speaking to a person in love is harder than we think. Prayer is needed to ensure the problem is dealt with correctly.
Don’t forget that God is passionately interested in our spiritual condition. So a spiritual eye test isn’t just for others; it must start with us. God wants each of us to have healthy spiritual eyes. While he already knows the state of our heart, it is important for us to be honest with him about those aspects of our lives that require attention.
What God wants is for our ‘whole body to be full of light’.
