Speaking up

imageBut in your hearts revere Christ as LORD. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect 1 Peter‬ ‭3:15‬ ‭(NIV)

Some people share their faith in a way similar to using a megaphone; they are loud and brash.  They think that their forcefulness will convince others about the rightness of the message they share.  The verse above from 1 Peter 3 encourages us to share our faith, but to do it with gentleness and respect.

It is always difficult to know when to share your faith and when to keep silent.  Again the verse from Peter’s letter gives us some sound advice – we are to give an answer to everyone who asks.  Waiting to be asked can be agonising and yes, there will be times when it is right to share the good news with those who haven’t asked to hear it.

What is envisaged here is someone noticing that there is something different about you, something distinctive that makes you stand out from the crowd.  In this instance their curiosity may lead them to ask about your faith. It might simply be that they ask you why you think as you do, or why you hold a particular view on some issue.  In this instance the question is at their instigation.  You should then be ready to give an answer.

I remember the old motto ‘Be prepared’ from days in Cubs and Scouts.  As a Christian, being prepared means that it is necessary to have thought about what you believe and also how you might explain it to others.  I don’t believe there is a better way to be prepared than to spent time reading and studying the Bible.  Additionally, it is necessary to spend time with God in prayer.  Remember to ask him to give you the courage to speak up when the time comes and particularly to give you the right words to share.

Are you prepared and ready to answer those who ask you about your beliefs?

The purpose of this blog is to encourage others to read the Bible on a regular basis and to discover that God's Word applies to daily life. I will generally publish posts and a Verse for the Day alternately.
