Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV)
There are many people in church who keep their gift hidden away and unused. Some do this out of fear – they are afraid to use their gift just in case they might not be gifted in that area after all. However, if they don’t use their gift, how can they discover what aspect of gifting they have.
We have to remember that whatever our gift might be, it has not been given to us for our benefit, but for the benefit of others.
Serving others involves a willingness to humble ourselves, but it also involves the other person being willing to be served. This reminds me of the words of the Servant Song:
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.
