Praying for …

imageI urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NIV)

Read: 1 Timothy 2:1-8

Consider: I remember as a child that we were encouraged in our nighttime prayers to pray for the immediate family. The prayers went something like ‘God bless mummy. God bless daddy. God bless ….’ The list included all my siblings. The problem wasn’t these prayers in themselves, it was that they stopped at the immediate family.

In the reading from 1 Timothy 2, Paul encourages Timothy to pray. He could easily have asked Timothy to pray for himself (after all he regarded Timothy as a dear son). Yet he didn’t do this. Instead Paul urged Timothy to pray for ‘… kings and all those in authority …’ Paul knew that even those in powerful positions need Christ.

Currently we are facing the presidential election in the USA. There has been much written about each candidate and their lack of suitability for presidential office. I am not going to add to the debate, nor am I going to tell the American people how they should vote. My question to you is ‘Have you been praying for each of the candidates?’ We can be sure that one of them will soon be sitting in the White House and, whomever it is, they will definitely need our prayers. Instead of us throwing up our hands in despair, we should be raising our hands in prayer, asking God to intervene in this election and to use the winner constructively to lead the nation fairly and justly.

Paul’s point is that despite kings and leaders not openly acknowledging God, they still need our prayers. We need to remember that ultimately God is passionately interested in the salvation of all people, even presidential candidates. Paul sums it up in 1 Timothy 2:4

This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Pray: Father, we pray specifically for the presidential candidates in the USA elections. We pray for their salvation. We also pray that when the winner takes up office, they may be led by you to act fairly and justly. Use them as an instrument of peace throughout the world. Amen

Every blessing
