No other way

Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me’.
John 14:5-6(NIV)

Read: John 14

Consider: I was reading a travel brochure recently and one of the destinations featured was described as ‘Bali – Isle of the Gods’. Of course this title got me thinking and I found myself focusing on Paul’s account of his time in Athens (Acts 17) and how he became aware that the people there had so filled their lives with idols that they had missed the one true God.

There are many people who try to find spiritual enlightenment by travelling to foreign countries and yet miss the One who is the true Light. They spend money, time and energy looking for a way to god, yet miss the One who said he is the Way to God. They want to discover the truth behind the universe, yet miss the One who said he was the Truth. They look for meaning and purpose in life, trying to ‘discover’ themselves, yet miss the One who said that he was the Life.

I have often wondered why many people find it so easy to sit in a temple in a far away land and can wax lyrical about how spiritual the experience is, yet would not spend as much time or energy attending a ‘Christianity Explored’, ‘Alpha’, or similar basic Christianity course.

Looking at the gospels it is obvious that the disciples took a long time to realise who Jesus really was (the Messiah) and even longer to understand what he achieved through his death and resurrection. It is important that as Christians we share the good news of the gospel in ways that people can relate to. This might mean running a basic Christianity course in someone’s home, local coffee shop or even a bar. What it doesn’t mean is adopting the standards of society so as to make Christianity seem attractive. The message itself is enough. The power to convert is not to be found in our use of technology, or any other clever device, it is only found in the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s heart.

So keep the message simple. Remember what Jesus said:‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me’.

Pray: Father, help us to remember the simplicity of the gospel and to point people to your Son as the way to find real meaning to life. Amen

Every blessing

The purpose of this blog is to encourage others to read the Bible on a regular basis and to discover that God's Word applies to daily life. I will generally publish posts and a Verse for the Day alternately.
