Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus …’ Romans 8:1 (NIV)
Can this really be true? So often as Christians we identify with Paul’s statement in Romans 7:24 ‘What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?’ We can be so conscious of the sinful nature that we forget to read on. Paul goes on to say ‘Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!’ (Romans 7:25). Deliverance from the penalty and power of sin is achieved through Christ’s death and resurrection.
Ending Romans chapter 7 with an awareness of sin and the ‘war’ that is going on in us, at the opening of chapter 8 Paul focuses on the position of those who are ‘… in Christ’. He says that ‘… there is now no condemnation …’
Now – in the light of what has been previously said
Now – at the present time
Now – nor ever will be
How do you live? Do you live in the knowledge of God’s forgiveness, but are burdened by your sinful nature? Do you live in the full knowledge of the fact that as you are in Christ there is no condemnation? The penalty for your sin (past, present and future) has been paid and you have been set free.
