Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
Many people imagine that committing their life to Christ will be burdensome and that enjoyment of life will end. However, what Jesus says in the verses above is that rest and refreshment are to be found in him. It is significant that the word ‘yoke’ is used, creating an image of a beast of burden. However, the following words of Jesus ‘… my yoke is easy and my burden is light’ give a clearer picture of what being a Christian is like. Committing your life to Christ does not put burdens on you, but actually removes the weight of the world from your shoulders.
