Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind …
My feet stand on level ground; in the great congregation I will praise the Lord. Psalm 26:2, 12 (NIV)
In Psalm 26 the writer has the courage to put his whole life before God, subjecting it to God’s examination and scrutiny. In verse 2 he not only lays his heart before God, but also his mind. Knowing the thoughts that we all have at times, can make this a frightening prospect.
The psalmist uses three terms to give an indication of the level of God’s scrutinising our lives:
Test me – when you test something to discover its strengths and weaknesses;
Try me – when you use something to see if it measures up;
Examine my heart and my mind – involving a detailed scrutiny where nothing can be hidden from view.
Are you prepared to lay your heart and mind before God so that he can refine you, helping you to grow more Christlike?
