Did you get the point of Christmas?

This is how God showed his love among us: he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 (NIV)

Christmas has come and gone for another year.  You’ve probably breathed a sigh of relief that the festivities went well.  Everyone enjoyed their Christmas meal and, more importantly, the presents you gave were well reveived.  Even better, the presents you received were just what you wanted!

Amid the rush and organisation did you get the point of Christmas?  We expect the world to be caught up in the hype and commercialism, but surely we can see beyond this to God’s real intention for Christmas.

Just in case you need reminding, read the verses above taken from 1 John 4 – this is the true meaning of Christmas.  The Old Testament prophets saw it from afar, predicting the birth of a saviour.  The New Testament writers witnessed the fulfilment of God’s promise through the birth of Jesus.  This would lead to another part of God’s plan – the death and resurrection of Jesus to redeem us.

Stand amazed at the wonder of Christmas!  Thank God for his love for humanity, in allowing his Son to come into the world as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Every blessing
