‘Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.‘ 2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)
Growing older poses many challenges, not least how we see ourselves. Having reached the age of 60 a few years ago, I recognise that it is one of those ‘major’ birthdays that either fill you with joy or trepidation. Personally I went with the joy, as I was looking forward to receiving my bus pass and using it.
However we look at it ‘… our outer self is wasting away’. Age does change the outward appearance and not all changes are for the better! Despite this, God tells us that the ‘… inner self is being renewed day by day’ (ESV). This is an encouragement for Christians not to look on the outward appearance, but to look at the inner self.
‘For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So fix your eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NIV).
