If God is for us, who can be against us?

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:37-39 (NIV)

Read: Romans 8:31-39

Consider: Have you ever wondered how strong your faith would be in the face of severe opposition, or adverse circumstances?  Let’s turn it around and ask a different question – is there anything that can happen that could possibly separate us from the love of God?  The Apostle Paul, in Romans 8, gives a list as illustrative of things that most people would think are significant (e.g. death, demons, future events) and which some might think could affect their relationship with God.  Paul goes on to state ‘… nor anything else in all creation …’ (Romans 8:39).  What he means is that there is nothing we could imagine that could possibly separate us from the love of God that is in Jesus.

Despite our circumstances we need to keep in mind what Paul says at the start of today’s passage: If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).  We also need to be honest in recognising that, when faced with severe circumstances, it is often difficult for us to keep our focus on God and his promises.

Our confidence in life should not be in ourselves, but based on who God is, what he has done for us and what he has promised.  As Christians, God does not promise us an easy life.  What we are promised is that even in difficult circumstances we are safe and secure because we are ‘… in Christ Jesus our Lord’ (8:39).

Pray: Father, may our trust and confidence always be in you.  Because we are in Christ we have nothing to fear from any external influence that might seek to harm us.  Amen

Every blessing
