Too Busy not to Pray

The shepherds are senseless and do not enquire of the Lord; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered.  Jeremiah‬ ‭10‬:‭21‬ (NIV)

In 1988 a book was published entitled ‘Too Busy Not to Pray’ by Bill Hybels.  The book’s sub-title was ‘Slowing Down to be with God’.  There is now a revised and updated edition available which I would recommend to you.

The verse from Jeremiah 10:21 gives a very clear indication of what God thinks of those who have pastoral (shepherding) responsibilities, yet fill their time with busyness; too busy not to pray.  People are very good at fooling themselves, thinking that busyness is somehow an indication of closeness to God.

The verse from Jeremiah tells us that God seees these people as ‘senseless’.  Sounds harsh?  It is meant to be!

Why does God think they are senseless?  Because they are busy?  No, because they do not enquire of the Lord.  Of course prayer can happen in small doses when the need arises.  More important, however, is the discipline of prayer that takes time to be wth God, enquiring of him, seeking his will and his insights into his word.

The outcome of a busy life neglectful of prayer is that the work does not prosper (spiritual gain is in mind) and worse still the flock is scattered.

So come to your senses!  Review your schedule and make time for prayer – to enquire of the Lord.

Every blessing
