In the beginning

imageIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
‭‭John‬ ‭1:1-3‬ ‭(NIV)

Read: John 1-2

Consider:  If you are familiar with the Bible you probably know that Genesis 1:1 reads ‘In the beginning  God …’  John evokes this reference to Genesis in the opening verse of his gospel, where he makes a bold claim about Jesus.  From the outset John claims that Jesus is the Word, he was with God and is God.  There can be no bolder claim to start a gospel.

Mark mirrors this claim at the start of his gospel by saying ‘The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God’.  (Mark‬ ‭1:1‬)

This is where we will start our reflections on John’s gospel.  The starting point is the claim that Jesus is the Son of God.  Are you prepared to read John’s gospel over the next three weeks looking at the evidence presented in support of this claim?   If so, enjoy the voyage of discovery that you are entering upon.

The gospels contain much eyewitness evidence as to who Jesus was and what he did.  What you have to do is to weigh up the evidence and decide if you agree that Jesus is indeed God.

Pray:  Father, as we start looking at the evidence for Jesus that is contained in John’s gospel, may we have an open heart and mind to weigh up the evidence that is presented.  Amen

Every blessing
