To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ They answered him, ‘We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?’ Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it for ever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:31-36 (NIV)
Jesus didn’t mince his words when he was in discussion with the Jews. He got straight to the point and confronted them with the reality of their situation.
In the quote above from John chapter 8, Jesus tells the Jews they are slaves. A radical thought at the time to speak to those who had been born free and to tell them that they were really slaves. However, Jesus was not talking about the physical, but the spiritual. He tells the Jews they are slaves based upon the fact that they are ‘slaves to sin’. Look again at what he said and notice that he is not just telling the Jews they are slaves. Jesus said, ‘… everyone who sins is a slave to sin’. That includes you and me!
Thankfully Jesus doesn’t leave us in the situation of being slaves to sin, he offers us freedom. Through believing in him we are set free, no longer slaves, but ‘sons’.
