Meeting Jesus – Our Great High Priest

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:14-16 (NIV)

Read: Hebrews 4:14 – 5:10

Consider: The previous posts in this series on ‘Meeting Jesus’ highlighted life-changing events for those who came into contact with him.  We looked at Jesus – ‘Living Water’, ‘Bread of Life’, ‘Light of the World’, ‘Good Shepherd’ and ‘Resurrection and Life’.  In not all instances did those who met Jesus see and understand who he was and some even missed the life-change that was being offered.

In this final post in the series, we consider Jesus – Our Great High Priest.  This assumes you have met with Jesus and accepted him as your Lord and Saviour.  Having believed and accepted him, he has become your Great High Priest.

The verses quoted above from Hebrews 4 teach us that Jesus is not aloof from us, he fully understands the weaknesses we have and the temptations we face.  Why should this matter to us?  The fact that Jesus faced the same temptations as us should encourage us, particularly when we are facing times of temptation.

As we come to the end of this series on Meeting Jesus, let me ask – have you met with him and understood who he is and have you accepted the life-change that he offers?  If not, then look back over the series and ask yourself who is this Jesus, what do the miracles reveal about him and what is this life-change that he is offering?

My prayer for you is that you might be like the woman at the well, who not only came to understand who Jesus was, but went away and told others about him.  Don’t be like the crowd who were fed, yet missed seeing who Jesus was.

If you are already a Christian, are you encouraged that Jesus knows what you are facing and you can approach God with confidence.   We have confidence because our Great High Priest, Jesus, is already there.   He has already paid the price for our sins.  We are freed from the penalty and power of sin.

Pray:  Father, we acknowledge that of ourselves we do not deserve your forgiveness.  Thank you for Jesus, who not only died in our place to pay the price of sin, but now is our Great High Priest at your right hand.  Amen

Every blessing
