The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. Psalm 19:7-8 (NIV)
Reading: Psalm 19:1-14
Consider: It is the time of year (in the west anyway) when people are growing tired and weary. If it’s been a busy year at home, in work, or in church activities, then there is a growing need for refreshment and renewal.
Every year many thousands of people look forward to their vacation, as it gives them a chance to wind down and ‘recharge the batteries’. Typical vacation activities might include hiking, camping, sailing, fishing, etc. The list is endless for the ways in which we can refresh the body. Of course these activities are designed for bodily refreshment, although they might impact on our spiritual welfare too.
As a Christian, of equal importance is the need to refresh our souls. But the question is how can this be done? Is the list of ways in which this can be done as endless as our vacation activities?
In Psalm 23:3 it says of God that ‘… he refreshes my soul’. However, there is a proviso and this is clear from Psalm 23:1, where it says ‘The Lord is my shepherd‘. So if the Lord is your shepherd (you have committed your life to Christ), then he will refresh your soul. But again we have to ask the question, how can this be done?
Looking at the verses quoted above from Psalm 19 we get a clearer answer. It is stated there that ‘The Law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul’ (v7). This tells us that spiritual refreshment is to be found in God’s Word (the Bible). So when you go on vacation, remember to pack your Bible and study notes.
Our challenge is this: if we are in need of refreshment, don’t rely only on the traditional vacation activities. Don’t neglect your spiritual welfare. Immerse yourself in God’s Word and you will be surprised how he refreshes your soul.
Receiving God’s refreshment isn’t just for vacations. By reading and studying God’s Word daily, you are opening yourself up to receiving God’s refreshment.
Pray: Father, thank you for vacations where we can have physical renewal and refreshment. May we put the same effort into keeping our souls refreshed day-by-day. Amen
